How to use a central bank calendar
A rate decision moves markets mainly when it differs from what was priced in beforehand, so the days before a meeting are usually spent watching how much of a hike or cut futures markets expect. The statement, the vote split and — at most banks — the governor’s press conference then shape expectations for the next meeting.
- Projection meetings matter more. The Fed (March, June, September, December), the ECB (staff projections in March, June, September and December), the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan and the Bank of Canada (quarterly reports) publish new forecasts at some meetings. Policy changes are more likely to be explained in depth at those meetings.
- Watch the time zones. On a day like October 28–30, 2026, the Bank of Canada (9:45 a.m. ET) and the Fed (2:00 p.m. ET) decide on the same Wednesday, followed by the ECB on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday.
- Check data first. Inflation and jobs data released before a meeting often decide the outcome. See the US release dates.
